Kopplung von Wasser-, Brand- und Klima-Resilienz mit der Biomasseproduktion aus der Forstwirtschaft zur Anpassung der Wasserscheiden an den Klimawandel

LIFE RESILIENT FORESTS ist ein Projekt, das aus dem LIFE Programm der Europäischen Union kofinanziert wird, um einen Forstmanagementansatz auf der Ebene der Einzugsgebietskala zu fördern. Ziel des Projekts ist es, die Resilienz der Wälder gegen Waldbrände, Wasserknappheit, Umweltzerstörung und andere durch den Klimawandel verursachte Auswirkungen zu verbessern.

Klimawandel und Waldökosysteme

Die Auswirkungen von Klimawandel und Klimaschwankungen auf die Waldökosysteme sind weltweit offensichtlich und die Auswirkungen sind zumindest kurz- und mittelfristig unvermeidlich. Der Klimawandel wirkt sich negativ auf die Waldökosysteme aus, indem er die Resilienz der Wälder gegen Störungen wie die Verringerung des Pflanzenwachstums, die Häufigkeit und Intensität von Schädlings- und Krankheitsausbrüchen, Waldbränden und Windstürmen verringert.

Die Auswirkungen auf die europäischen Waldökosysteme

Zwischen 1950 und 2000 wurden in Europa durchschnittlich 35 Millionen Kubikmeter Holz jährlich durch Störungen wie Stürme (53%) und Waldbrände (16%) beschädigt. Die Jahre 2003 und 2007 haben gezeigt, dass Waldbrände bei großen Dürren verheerend sein können. Der Klimawandel wird die Zahl und Schwere der Dürren in vielen Teilen Europas erhöhen und die Verfügbarkeit der Wasserressourcen beeinträchtigen. In den letzten 30 Jahren hat sich die Fläche der EU, die von Wasserknappheit und Dürren betroffen ist, von 6 auf 13% verdoppelt. Die damit verbundenen wirtschaftlichen Verluste dieser Zunahme wurden auf 100 Milliarden Euro geschätzt.

  Entscheidungsunterstützungssystem

LIFE Resilient Forest wird ein System zur Einführung von Strategien zur Anpassung an den Klimawandel in der Forstwirtschaft in ganz Europa entwickeln. Dieses Instrument wird auf einem erfolgreichen Ansatz beruhen, der bereits von der Gemeinde Serra (Valencia, Spanien) verfolgt wurde.

  Replikation

Für die Übertragung dieses Ansatzes wird eine Replikationsstrategie entwickelt, die es ermöglicht, diesen europaweit anzuwenden.

  Vernetzung

Es werden Vernetzungsaktivitäten entwickelt, damit das Projekt von anderen erfolgreichen Initiativen im Zusammenhang mit der Forstwirtschaft und dem Klimawandel profitieren kann und um den Informationstransfer über Forstwirtschaft und Klimaschutzinitiativen zu erleichtern

  Demonstration

Das Fördersystem wird an unterschiedliche Bedingungen angepasst und an drei Standorten in Deutschland, Portugal und Spanien sowohl im Teileinzugsgebiet als auch im Einzugsgebiet demonstriert.

  Überwachung

Das Projekt wird eine vollständige Überwachung der Auswirkungen durchführen, einschließlich einer Ökobilanz (LCA) des Systems, um die Umweltverträglichkeit des Ansatzes und seine sozioökonomischen Auswirkungen in ländlichen Gebieten nachzuweisen.

  Verbreitung

LIFE RESILIENT FORESTS wird eine umfassende Verbreitungsmaßnahme durchführen, um sowohl öffentliche als auch private Interessengruppen zu erreichen und positive Auswirkungen auf Vorschriften und Politiken für die Forstwirtschaft in ganz Europa zu erzielen.
