Combinando água, fogo, resiliência climática com a
produção de biomassa a partir da gestão florestal
para adaptar as bacias hidrográficas às mudanças climáticas.

O LIFE RESILIENT FORESTS é um projeto cofinanciado pelo programa LIFE da União Europeia para promover a gestão florestal a nível da bacia hidrográfica, a fim de melhorar a resiliência da floresta aos incêndios florestais, escassez de água, degradação ambiental e outros efeitos induzidos pelas alterações climáticas.

Alterações climáticas e ecossistemas florestais

Os efeitos das alterações climáticas e da variabilidade climática nos ecossistemas florestais são evidentes em todo o mundo. Os seus impactos são inevitáveis, pelo menos a curto e médio prazo. As alterações climáticas afetam negativamente os ecossistemas florestais tornando-os menos resilientes a perturbações como a redução do crescimento das plantas, a frequência e a intensidade de surtos de pragas e doenças, incêndios florestais, tempestades de vento, etc..

Os efeitos nos ecossistemas florestais Europeus

Entre 1950 e 2000 na Europa, uma média de 35 milhões de metros cúbicos de madeira foi danificada anualmente devido a perturbações como tempestades (53%) e incêndios florestais (16%). Os anos de 2003, 2007 e 2017 mostraram que os incêndios florestais podem ser devastadores quando os períodos de seca se estendem pelo território. As alterações climáticas aumentarão o número e a gravidade das secas em muitas partes da Europa e afetarão a disponibilidade de recursos hídricos. Durante os últimos 30 anos, a área da UE afetada pela escassez de água e secas duplicou, passando de 6% para 13%. As perdas económicas associadas a esse aumento foram estimadas em 100 mil milhões de Euros.

 Sistema de Suporte à Decisão

O projeto LIFE RESILIENT FORESTS pretende desenvolver um sistema para definir estratégias de adaptação às alterações climáticas aplicado às áreas florestais Europeias. Esta ferramenta será baseada numa abordagem bem-sucedida que já foi adotada no município de Serra (Valência, Espanha).

  Replicação

Uma estratégia de replicação será desenvolvida para transferir essa abordagem, para que possa ser aplicada em outras realidades por toda a Europa.

  Rede de contatos

As atividades de contato serão desenvolvidas para que o projeto possa tirar proveito de outras iniciativas bem-sucedidas relacionadas com a gestão florestal e com as alterações climáticas, bem como facilitar a transferência de informações sobre iniciativas no âmbito da gestão florestal e alterações climática.

  Demonstração

O sistema de apoio à decisão será baseado em diferentes condições e testado em três bacias hidrográficas localizadas na Alemanha, Portugal e Espanha, tanto a nível da sub-bacia como à escala da bacia.

  Monitorização

O projeto prevê a monitorização completa dos impactes, incluindo uma Avaliação do Ciclo de Vida (ACV) do sistema, de forma a comprovar a sustentabilidade ambiental da abordagem definida e os seus efeitos socioeconómicos nas áreas rurais.

  Disseminação

O Projeto LIFE RESILIENT FORESTS realizará uma ampla ação de disseminação para alcançar as partes interessadas, públicas e privadas, e para atingir um impacto positivo nas regulamentações e políticas para a gestão florestal em toda a Europa.
